Ashley joined Caliber Design as a Design Engineer after obtaining a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Canterbury. His technical ability, communication skills, and positive attitude have led to him being promoted to Analysis Manager. In this role, Ashley will continue to develop our team’s analysis skills and embed best practice across the company, while building our analysis offering so that we can continue to exceed our clients expectations.
I’m an experienced ME qualified mechanical engineer who takes a pragmatic approach to both design and analysis work. I strongly believe that great work relies on great communication. I therefore aim to foster a strong working relationship with all of our clients.
Currently managing the analysis offering for the Caliber team, I have significant experience in the analysis of machine and structural components using FEA, CFD and AS/NZS codes. I believe that all analysis work is not complete without simple, practical recommendations for our clients.
I have significant experience in the design of food and beverage, powder and materials handling equipment and proficiency with a range of CAD systems. I’ve carried out scoping and prototyping work for consumer products as well as concepting and 2D layouts for large factories. I aim to combine a practical engineering background with an attention to detail that ensures our clients are always satisfied with the end result.

Project Experience
ADVANCED PLASTICS AND DESIGN
60,000L Hazsure Storage Tank
Seismic analysis for what is to date the largest polyethylene bulk hazardous storage tank in New Zealand. Design for both positive and negative internal pressures was required.

GILTRAP
Fertiliser Spreader
Working in conjunction with another Caliber engineer, providing a combined design & analytical verification of a hybrid rotationally moulded PE and fabricated steel fertiliser spreader. This development will allow Giltrap to achieve a significant cost saving and target a new market area.
ROCKLABS
RIO 350 Crush & Split System Pulp Conveyor
Embodiment and detailed design of the exit conveyor for a powdered rock sample preparation machine. The key focus was design for both reliability and health and safety.

AUTOMAC ENGINEERING
Various Conveying Systems
Responsible for delivery of a range of different conveying systems – carrying out concept development, 3D CAD and manufacturing drawings as well as procurement and coordinating fabrication. These time critical projects were for a range of large key clients in the dairy and packaging industries in NZ and Australia.

ACE DOORS
Hushshutter Elite
Working with Ace Doors to develop a range of roller shutter door designs then providing the analytical resource to validate these designs against AS/NZS codes. Consolidated these results into a series of straightforward and intuitive design tables for installation.
SHOTOVER F1 CAMERA SYSTEM
F1 Camera Turret Analysis
Determined the drag loads on the three-axis turret assembly in a variety of configurations, then compare these results with physical test data to provide operating curves and, combined with momentum calculations, a never-exceed velocity (Vne) for the unit.
GLOBALFORCE
Concrete Gun Prototype Development
Developed a working prototype and test plan for a heavy duty nail gun concept. The project was delivered successfully and significantly under-budget due to successfully liaising with our Taiwanese supplier.

SANITARIUM
Plant Upgrades
Managing a range of H&S plant upgrades, organising commissioning tests, and liaising with a range of key stakeholders.
TP Engineering & New Zealand Steel
T4 Iron Sand Conveyor
Re-development of a 1.4km iron sand bulk handling conveyor for the New Zealand mining industry.
