Mechanical/hydraulic system that allows trailers to steer automatically, relative to the turning angle of tractor and drawbar. The innovative ready-to-fit design makes this product very easy to assemble and it’s easy to use – zero driver training is required. Variable steering angles allow different steering configurations, without the need for complex electro-hydraulic control systems. A pressurised closed hydraulic circuit means there’s no need for external hydraulic service.
12 Metre Ring Roller
Colin’s first ‘end to end’ design project undertaken as a professional, during his last 2 months of placement at Cross Engineering. The design incorporates 5 separate rows of cast iron rings which when lay flat covered a width of 12.25m. For transport, 4 sets of rollers and lifted to the vertical position via four hydraulic cylinders. The rear axle lifts the entire machine from the ground with an additional cylinder. The machine also includes a floating system which allows the width of the machine to adjust to the lay of the ground beneath it.
Involved managing projects from initial needs and requirements stages, through the full design process, including multiple review cycles, and into project implementation.
Autodesk Inventor was the primary CAD software used throughout the detailed design and drawing phases. Gained a lot of experience in handling large assemblies and producing drawings for manufacture.
2 in 1 Mechanical handbrake and failsafe breakaway mechanism for agricultural trailers. The Powerbrake breakaway mechanism incorporates a failsafe component attached to the vehicle side via a tensile 6mm steel wire rope. Once the moving trailer is detached, the wire is designed to pull the brake levers directly and activate the brakes of the moving trailer. Once engaged the failsafe component is designed to fail at 2000kg of force, safely stopping the moving wayward trailer.
From an early age, Colin had a keen aptitude for mechanical engineering. Having grown up in a rural farm in the south east of Ireland, agricultural machinery has always been of interest to him, leading to completion of a 4 year engineering degree and gaining experience in two agricultural machinery manufacturers as an Assembly Technician and Design Engineer.
Since finishing his degree and joining the workforce, Colin has brought many technical innovations from concept through to full scale manufacture. A keen communicator, Colin enjoys listening to people’s ideas and transforming them in to reliable and robust functioning products. His key skills are robust mechanical design, CAD and FEA.

SQUARE SWIVEL HITCH
For use with agricultural trailers, the square body allows for fabrication without the requirement for additional gusset support to the trailer drawbar, decreasing material and labour costs. The ring of the hitch is offset 10mm above the central axis of rotation. This reduces unnecessary movement at the hinge point resulting in significantly reduced wear and increases lifespan. The design also includes an internal grease track to allow for more effective lubrication, increasing the lifespan further. The project involved extensive FEA testing and validation.
