Jamie Emmart
MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Skills Overview
Jamie’s experience is grounded in project engineering and asset management in heavy industry. He has an informal communication style which facilitates working with people from board room to shop floor. Jamie enjoys working in collaborative, cross-functional teams to solve complex problems and drive holistic, economic, practical solutions that achieve customer goals. He takes pride in seeing tasks through; investigating root causes, supporting manufacture and commissioning, even supporting use after commissioning.
-
ASSET MANAGEMENT – Jamie is experienced with the maintenance and improvement of complex, heavy, multi-function assets. He utilises ISO 55000 methodologies to ensure clients assets provide the right value to their organisations and that planning and decisions are made using a risk based approach. Jamie has a knack with asset management software (such as SAP) which can help customers get the most out of these systems.
-
DATA TRANSFORMATION – Jamie has a natural gift for automating complex problems, whether that is analysis of equipment breakdowns to forecast economic end of life, compliance/capacity assessments for hazardous equipment, or provision of “tools” to provide operators, tradespeople, or managers with quick access to information so they can get on with their jobs.
-
PROJECT ENGINEERING – Jamie has provided design and project management for a wide variety of projects including $10k projects that saved $1m per year, $1m+ equipment refurbishments during plant shutdowns. Jamie enjoys managing high risk projects and is skilled at identifying and implementing safeguards to achieve successful outcomes.
-
ANALYSIS & DESIGN – Jamie is experienced with engineering calculations including bulk storage tank assessments to API and NZ codes, fluid calculations to size and test smoke exhaust ducting and fans, natural gas safety shutdown and vent station, design of structures for impact resilience, high temperatures and earthquake loading.
-
CAD – Jamie is proficient with most common 3D modelling software. 3D models are great for quickly mocking up concept designs to assess feasilibity with stakeholders before committing to detailed design time. Jamie is also skilled at creating detailed but adaptive designs to minimise work on remote sites and give the manufacturing teams the info they need. Jamie’s committment extends to including his name and mobile number on drawings so tradespeople can call for advice, request changes, etc. Jamie is most skilled with Inventor and uses Fusion 360 at home to design timber and 3D printing projects.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Engineering is a fun career where I get to work with others to design and build cool gear that makes our society function. The petrochemical and steel industries developed my project, maintenance, and design skills. I have an informal communication style, and enjoy working with people from board room to shop floor to ensure my designs and projects are successful. I am passionate about sustainability. New Zealand has a lot of old machinery which can be modernised to improve reliability and capacity with less environment impact than purchasing new equipment.
Project Experience
Diagnose Corrosion in Seawater Piping
Ship piping system was repeatedly failing where medium bore galvanised pipe was connected to small bore copper-nickel piping. Developed solutions for implementation throughout piping system including engine coolers.
Replacement of RHIB Rear Frame
Took over project at detailed design. Developed FEA model into detailed fabrication drawings in 6061 aluminium alloy. Tendered, supervised prefabrication, test fitting and successful installation of first 4 boats.
Marine Smoke Exhaust System
Took over project at the beginning of detailed design. Challenging project as solution could not comply with industry designs and significant pressure from regulator.
Lead a multidisciplinary team to design an innovative solution using inhouse manufactured smoke curtains and high temperature rated marine smoke exhaust fans.
Provided technical support to installation and commissioning. Lead testing of solution which involved pressuring sections of the ship, detecting leakage. Significant leakage between door frame and bulkhead up into ceiling space was resolved and ship was ready for deployment on time.
Emergency Escape Hatch
Project to add an escape hatch at the top of a marine elevator shaft. Hatch required relocating a fan, ducting and fire water pipework and integration with the lift safety system.

LAMBTON HARBOUR DRAW BRIDGE
Concept design of draw bridge had to be low maintenance and take 3-5 minutes to open/close. Design chosen used a cylindrical counter weight /water tank. The bridge is raised by filling the tank with fresh water. Lowering is by siphoning the water out and draining into the sea.
SERVICE ENGINEERS
Wanganui Waste Water Treatment Plant
Engineering and fabrication of sewage processing silos and tanks, plant layouts, support for project management.
Waitara Valley Cooling Tower Refurbishment
Planning and scheduling of 70 people during a 3 week, 24 hour shutdown. Leadership of 4 person shut management team. Preparation of concept through to detailed proposals including payback. Proactively managing project risks (injuries, material deliveries, etc). Preparation of material and construction tender documents. Project closeout report including future work, actual payback vs. pre-construction prediction.
API-579 Assessment of Heat Exchanger Corrosion
Assessment of a 330 mm tube sheet using API579 level 3 (FEA via Matrix) and development of inspection method in preparation for statutory inspection.
PACIFIC STEEL GROUP
Gas Safety Shutdown System
Process and Mechanical Design of system to detect and manage failures in the natural gas supply to the plant. Included project options and feasibility, capital funding, change management, installation, commissioning, operational and maintenance procedures, and training.

BP / NZ OIL SERVICES
Various Projects
Project engineering for BP and New Zealand Oil Services. Specialising in assessment and code compliance of bulk storage tanks (inc seismic) and pipe flow assessments. Management of tank inspection and refurbishment programme. Oil Terminal fire fighting assessments and attack plans with the NZFS.
GOOD BUGGER AWARD
September 2021
Jamie was awarded the Caliber Design Good Bugger award after being nominated by a number of his peers. They wanted to acknowledge the leadership, support, and mentoring Jamie provides at Babcock and internal projects. A timely award, as we also celebrate Jamie’s 5 year anniversary at Caliber this month.
April 2020
During lockdown, Jamie was nominated by two colleagues to receive the Good Bugger Award. Despite the challenging conditions, Jamie was instrumental in creating an “optimistic, enthusiastic, and productive team” and “he always has a smile and is more than happy to help”.
