What skills, attributes, and experience make you a great Caliber engineer?

I’m an all-rounder – I’ve got fairly broad experience in Mechanical Engineering in NZ which allows me to jump in and get up to speed pretty quick in all areas of a project.

How did you get into engineering?

I grew up around workshops and in a practical “have a go” household. I spent a lot of time as a kid pulling things apart, as I grew up, I started to understand how they worked and how to put them back together again. This curiosity for how things work lead me into Engineering.

Where / what did you study?

I studied at UC graduating in 2012 with a BE (hons) Mechanical.

What do you enjoy most about mechanical engineering?

No two days are the same. It’s such a massive field with so many novel wee facets.

What engineering experience did you have before you came to Caliber?

I had a couple of years in biomedical / medical device with Fisher & Paykel Healthcare in Auckland working in neonatal product development.

I moved back to Nelson and joined a general engineering firm with a large fabrication and jobbing shop, I built up a team of design and consulting engineers within that business over 6 years.

Since then, I have been self-employed as a mechanical designer. I joined Caliber mid-2022.

What makes working for Caliber different from the other engineering companies you’ve worked for?

Having a large pool of knowledge and experience on hand has been awesome for when we get into tricky elements of projects.

Is there a particular project that’s been a highlight of your career?

Working in medical device in the neonatal space was amazing. Getting to design, prototype, and evaluate products and getting to work in a clinical environment were highlights.

What would your dream project be?

Either medical device especially in the neonatal space or green technology in the aerospace industry would be the dream.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I’m an active bloke so anything that gets me outdoors and gets the heart rate up I’m keen for.
