CASE STUDY | Marine Component Modelling
Hall Spars are experts in designing and manufacturing carbon masts and booms. They work with the largest and best-renowned sailmakers and shipyards around the world to create custom carbon fibre solutions for family cruisers to racing yachts. Their mast systems incorporate all components for rigging, along with ancillary electronics for the mast.
THE CHALLENGE
Hall Spars NZ had more design work than their inhouse team could manage. The project scope was to design machined components and assemblies of a composite mast, design for assembly into the mast, and analysis for part stresses under load.
THE SOLUTION
Caliber supplied an engineer skilled in Solidworks, able to quickly get up to speed and contribute effectively to the following design tasks:
- identified opportunities to streamline the design process, which meant tasks were completed quicker than expected and improvements to the design, in terms of accuracy and robustness, were made.
- performed stress analysis of components to validate these for expected loading.
- completed design for six different elements of the mast and rigging system during the 8-week assignment: Spreader bar, Mast Base Teletubes, D-Tangs, Sheavebox assemblies.
The extra engineering support from Caliber enabled Hall Spars to catch up on their design backlog, maintaining the delivery date of their projects.
