CASE STUDY
Wyma Solutions | Tank Design Optimisation
Wyma Solutions is a global leader in post-harvest vegetable and fruit handling equipment, with machinery operating in more than 50 countries. Having designed multiple large water tanks for Wyma, including units up to 8000L carrying more than six tonnes of rotating equipment, Caliber was engaged to optimise the company’s smaller 3000–4000L tank design. The goal was to reduce fabrication time and cost while ensuring performance and reliability under hydrostatic loading.
KEY TASKS
- Re-engineered existing tank design to reduce fabrication requirements by ~20%
- Developed a standard template model to streamline future design work
- Performed hand calculations to check panel displacement under hydrostatic forces
- Verified results against the Pressure Vessel Handbook
- Prepared CAD models for shell FEA analysis in Autodesk Inventor
- Collaborated with Wyma production team on fabrication details
- Witnessed hydrostatic water testing and provided learnings
HOW WE DELIVERED
The existing design relied on double fillet welds down each corner of the tank, driving up fabrication hours. Caliber investigated alternatives and proposed a single-weld design, halving the welding time in these areas. Understandably, the client was cautious—any compromise in performance could introduce significant operational risk.
To provide confidence, our engineer ran traditional hand calculations to assess panel displacement under hydrostatic force and compared these with Pressure Vessel Handbook guidelines. A CAD model was then prepared for finite element analysis, validating that the modified geometry could flex appropriately under load without overstressing the material. Interestingly, the analysis indicated that the reduced stiffness at the corners actually improved the tank’s ability to dish under pressure, reducing stress concentrations.
The design was reviewed with Wyma’s production team, manufactured, and water tested. Results confirmed the revised configuration performed as expected, delivering a more efficient and cost-effective solution that is now being implemented across multiple projects.
Jonny has been a great addition to our team. He brings strong analysis and modelling skills, and his interpersonal skills are exceptional—he checks in regularly and makes sure projects are heading in the right direction. His proactive approach and willingness to learn make him a valuable team member.
