Blair Lees
MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Skills Overview
Blair is a highly experienced mechanical design engineer with more than 20 years in the design and manufacture of complex machinery and automated systems. With a background spanning product development, industrial automation, and process engineering, Blair brings practical insight and creativity to every project. He thrives on taking ideas from concept to completion, combining strong 3D design capability, sound engineering judgment, and a hands on understanding of manufacturing.
- PRODUCT & PROCESS DEVELOPMENT – Blair has spent his career designing and developing machinery and production systems across a wide range of industries—from food processing and fire protection to automation, conveyors, and safety cutting equipment. He specialises in taking projects from concept through to production, methodically researching, modelling, prototyping, and refining each design to deliver efficient, manufacturable solutions.
- AUTOMATION & MACHINE DESIGN – Blair has extensive experience with automated conveying, cutting, and handling systems. He understands the integration of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic elements and has delivered complete systems using servo, pneumatic, and hydraulic actuation. His work regularly includes developing safe, easy to maintain machinery with precise motion control and reliable production performance.
- CALCULATIONS & ANALYSIS – Blair takes a structured engineering approach to his work, using sound mechanical principles and FEA analysis to validate key components. He is skilled in load analysis, actuator and gearbox selection, and system integration, with a strong focus on safety and performance verification prior to manufacture.
- MACHINE DESIGN & FABRICATION – From industrial mixers and CNC plate systems to modular conveyors and safety bandsaws, Blair’s designs are built with manufacturability and serviceability in mind. He’s highly experienced in sheet metal, welded fabrication, and mechanical assemblies, with detailed understanding of bearing selection, structural design, and alignment.
- PNEUMATICS & HYDRAULICS – Across multiple projects, Blair has specified and integrated pneumatic and hydraulic control systems. This includes cylinder and valve selection, control sequencing, and troubleshooting of existing systems for improved performance and safety.
- GENERAL ENGINEERING – With more than 20 years in industry, Blair’s experience spans SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and production management. He’s led end to end design projects, created detailed manufacturing packs and BOMs, and provided on site commissioning and workshop support. His practical, hands on background helps bridge the gap between design, fabrication, and functionality.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I’m a mechanical design engineer with experience developing machinery and automated systems across manufacturing, food processing, and industrial sectors. Over my career, I’ve designed everything from high speed conveyors and CNC cutting machines to industrial mixers, fire protection systems, and safety focused bandsaws.
I take a practical, hands on approach to engineering, using strong 3D CAD skills and solid mechanical insight to create designs that are safer, smarter, and more efficient. I enjoy turning ideas into real, working solutions that make production easier and more reliable.
Outside of work, you’ll often find me in or on the water. I’m heavily involved with Surf Lifesaving New Zealand as a Patrol Captain, Instructor, and Marine SAR Technician. I also enjoy surfing, mountain biking, motorcycles, and building just about anything with moving parts.
Project Experience

SAFETY BANDSAW
Design, Development, and Product Enhancement
Developed a safety bandsaw from concept through to production release in the USA. Involved in component layout, sheet metal design, and motor selection, along with incorporating feedback from internal and external stakeholders. Supported fabrication, machining, and assembly to streamline manufacture.
Went on to design several attachments, infeed/outfeed conveyors and tables for the constant improvement of the existing Bandsaw range, several products became standard with every bandsaw manufactured.
CONVEYOR SYSTEMS & TRANSFER ASSEMBLIES
Concept, design, and project delivery
Conceptualised, designed, and project managed a range of conveyor systems and associated transfer assemblies. Scope included motor and gearbox selection, sheet metal and shaft design, belt selection, and support structure design using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

JIPL
Battery Recycling Plant Installation
Designed and project managed the installation of the Chempro battery recycling plant in Petone, Wellington. Worked closely with the client to specify and procure major components and machinery, and designed the associated platforms and access ways. Managed prefabrication in Auckland, including platforms, valving assemblies, tanks, mixers, pumps, pH monitoring, and electrical control equipment, followed by site installation and final commissioning.
