    Rogan Petre

    MECHANICAL ENGINEER

    Skills Overview

Rogan is an experienced and adaptable mechanical engineer, with a background in the heavy vehicle industry. He has built a skillset around the complete project life cycle, from initial design, detailed drawings, project oversight, and manufacturing. Having spent time with internal workshops both on the tools and communicating fabrication requirements, he has learnt to solve complex problems within manufacturing limitations. His strength lies with his ability to adapt quickly and master new tools and techniques efficiently.

      • 3D MODELLING & DRAFTING – Rogan’s experience is with AutoCAD and SolidWorks, being responsible for completing detailed drawings for full trailer assemblies he has designed. This includes complex smaller assemblies where accuracy and attention to detail is extremely important. He was also responsible for transitioning the company from full 2D drawings to 3D models in SolidWorks, building a robust model that can be easily copied and modified to suit any customers requirements.

      • DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE – Rogan has experience in Mechanical Design in the heavy vehicle industry, creating designs for logging and container trailers. Often a limitation of design is the manufacturability, the ability to design with this in mind is a skill that comes with experience. Rogan has worked closely with manufacturing teams, both on the tools and as a design engineer and has developed a strong understanding of what is and isn’t possible. Always ensuring potential issues are identified and solved before they become a problem.

      • PROJECT ENGINEERING & DOCUMENTATION – Rogan has experience in project engineering, being responsible for the full project lifecycle, from initial design to client handover. Overseeing projects through the manufacturing process to ensure client requirements are met and delivery is on time. He is also responsible for maintaining and creating complete project documentation, covering certification requirements, design procedures, and technical reports.

      • STRUCTURAL CALCULATIONS & FEA – Being responsible for the full design process, Rogan has extensive experience with structural analysis through hand calculations, excel spreadsheets and FEA. Where possible he has developed full loading spreadsheets, in which critical dimensions and loading requirements can be easily modified to suit. He has also used SolidWorks Simulation for static, fatigue and non-linear analysis for components / scenarios where it is hard for manual calculations to provide the full picture of the dynamic loading.

      PERSONAL STATEMENT

I enjoy the challenge engineering brings to me, I find solving problems and learning new skills is very fulfilling. Growing up I always had an interest in efficiencies, often figuring out robust and time efficient solutions to whatever had my interest at the time. This has developed through my engineering career as an ability to tackle problems from many perspectives and deliver results. I also enjoy being involved in the entire process, meeting with people from any part of the business and learning their perspective.

My career began in the Heavy vehicle industry at Patchell Industries in Rotorua, I spent a few summers and holidays on the workshop floor while studying at University and eventually made my way to the design office. Eventually being responsible for full trailer projects, taking the quoting and customer requirements through to delivery, completing; design, drawings, calculations, technical documentation, and project oversight with the manufacturing team.

Outside of work, you’ll most likely find me outdoors, where I like to spend my time golfing, skiing, playing football and exploring new places. I have done a couple of overseas trips, visiting both Canada and Japan, mainly for the skiing, but sight seeing too.

      Project Experience

      Patchell Industries Ltd
      Wharf Trailer Redesign

Redesigned a legacy heavy duty wharf trailer to be manufactured fully from profiled components. The previous design was never analysed and was predominantly built from Universal Beam sections. I was responsible for creating a design which saved time in the manufacturing process by using profiled components, while not compromising structural strength. Completed SolidWorks modelling while communicating with manufacturing teams to increase efficiency & conducted extensive FEA on chassis structure.

      Off-Highway Tipping Bin Trailer

Responsible for the design of a new concept off highway tipping trailer, which began as a quote from the sales team with a use case the client required. The scale of the loading requirements as well as the dynamic loading nature of a tipping bin trailer meant the chassis structure and bin support needed to be analysed fully to ensure safe operation. Completed concept design, full FEA calculations, detailed drawings and oversaw manufacture in the workshop.

Standardised SolidWorks Model for Logging Trailers

Developed a base model for standard logging trailers in SolidWorks, all of which were previously maintained in 2D AutoCAD. The model needed to be easily copied and modified to suit customer requirements while also being robust, with the objective of saving design office time.
