CASE STUDY | MoorMaster Pedestal
Cavotec is a world leading manufacturer of connection and electrification solutions for the maritime industry. The Christchurch office is home to the design team and centre of excellence for Cavotec MoorMaster™ automated vacuum mooring machines for the modern shipping industry.
THE CHALLENGE
On-ship obstacles and berth face space limitations meant the MoorMaster system couldn’t be mounted in its standard position for a specific customer.
The scope of the project was to design a steel pedestal capable of withstanding the design loads of the MoorMaster system at the elevated position.
The pedestal would be mounted to the berth prior to the machine’s arrival, so the MoorMaster system could be bolted in the elevated position.
THE SOLUTION
Caliber has a team of engineers onsite at Cavotec supporting their design program. For this project, using the design loads of the MoorMaster system, the reaction loads at the pedestal footplates were calculated and used to determine the base plate size and the anchoring requirements for the steel pedestal. A steel structure was then modelled and optimised using Solidwoks FEA to find a cost-effective solution capable of withstanding the fatigue loading. Caliber worked closely with the customer throughout the design process to ensure the all requirements were met.
The result was a detailed design report, drawing package, and installation documents for the steel pedestal.
