MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Skills Overview

Gustavo is a mechanical engineer experienced in a range of areas. His strongest background is in machinery design for turn-key projects. He has outstanding analytical skills and attention to detail, that he has applied in projects ranging from whole production lines for car manufacturing, to piping, structural design, and electronics design. His time spent on site and in the workshop gives him the project engineering know-how to meet user, installation, and manufacturing needs.

    • MACHINE DESIGN – Gustavo has many years of experience in custom automated machinery design, involved from the initial site measurements to manufacture support and final commissioning. He has a keen eye for detail and proficiency in integrating the different bodies of knowledge required, working side by side with many other disciplines.
    • PROJECT ENGINEERING – Gustavo has worked in several integration projects, where groups of custom machines were designed, built, automated, and integrated into existing production lines. His experience and people skills help him pull different disciplines together and contribute to successful project outcomes.
    • ANALYSIS – Gustavo’s thorough analytical profile allows him to identify technical constraints and risks early on, and he has the skills required to find the possible solutions through calculations, design and documentation, whether those solutions are standard or out of the box.
    • SITE MEASUREMENT – Gustavo has experience in the measurement of buildings and industrial facilities, both as a surveyor’s assistant and as a design engineer. He is skilled in the use of simple tools to obtain difficult measurements, and his geometry and metrology training allow him to deal effectively with measurement uncertainty and its impact on design.
    • DESIGN FOR CUSTOM FABRICATION – Both from his professional activities and hobbies, Gustavo has a keen eye in considering feasibility and efficiency of fabrication with resource constraints, and in creating documentation (drawings or procedures) that effectively communicate the design.

    PERSONAL STATEMENT

The youngest in a big family where we had the early internet but not cable TV, I got to tinker and learn through curiosity on many branches of science and tech, constantly seeking the logic behind everyday objects. Through dismantling stuff and creating, I got valuable lessons early on; all that paired with an intuitive handle of mathematics and the resourcefulness learnt by having more interests than resources.

My experience as an engineer is strongest in machine design for turnkey automation projects (functional and 3D design, drafting, FMEA, calculations, documents, procurement, buyoffs, commissioning, etc). I’m experienced in the constraints of medium sized companies having to adopt new technologies in big projects while complying to strict standards of large clients.

I’m a strong analyst and problem solver, able to optimize the known and venture into the unknown. I rely on a diverse knowledge base, hands-on experience, and a critical, flexible and risk conscientious mindset to look for the best solution.

    Project Experience

    SPS Automation
    Seed Bagger Modifications

Designed and implemented a series of modifications to improve the reliability and productivity of an automated seed bagging machine. This involved mechanical design, failure mode analysis, and hands-on development of practical solutions optimised for performance. I also collaborated with the SPS software team to refine parts of the automation sequence.

    Drone Project Support

Conducted preliminary static FEA studies to gain insights into the stress distribution within a geometrically complex drone frame and adaptor connection. The analysis involved integrating composite materials with various metal alloys.

    BFD Structural Analysis Support

Conducted preliminary static FEA studies to understand stresses in a geometrically complex frame and adaptor connection, using aluminium, titanium, and composite materials.

    Cryogenic Pressure Vessel & Structures

I contributed to the mechanical design and analysis of a cryogenic pressure vessel and two small structures. As the project was in an advanced state, I also offered my assembly and installation background to help evaluate various design details and add the final touches.

    Foot Science International
    Instruments & Procedures

I developed in-house built instruments and procedures to aid in their processes, optimising for accuracy and repeatability in manual processes involving complex geometries with jigs and tools built with FDM 3D printers.

Cruze and tracker suspension and subframe assembly line

    GENERAL MOTORS ARGENTINA

Cruze and tracker suspension and subframe assembly line

Cruze and Tracker suspension and subframe assembly line | The line has 3 dual-product assembly cells for: front rotor + strut, front axle subframe and rear axle. My role was as a design engineer for part of the machines and devices, a mechanical calculations engineer, and a technical problem solver for the entire project. The project developed over 3 years.

    Electronic instrumentation devices

    FIS INSTRUMENTOS

    Electronic instrumentation devices

Developed custom digital electronic instrumentation devices for the craft and home brewer market, on a entrepeneur project of my own. Designed circuits, designed and assembled boards (PCB), and programmed firmware for microcontrollers. Built thermowells, cases and other hardware for devices.

    ASPECT FURNITURE

    Product Design Projects

Contributed to multiple design projects, including final-stage delivery of an office desk, initial concept design for a bag hook, and iterative design, prototyping, and drawing for a ceiling system.

    Global Bus Ventures
Bus Body & Chassis Design & Analysis

I contributed to the design and structural analysis of a range of bus bodies, chassis, and accessories such as battery pack holders. Because the builds involved both engineering and hands-on craftsmanship, I regularly consulted with both designers and builders to ensure the new designs aligned with their extensive practical experience and existing optimisations.

    Services Upgrades

As part of the later stages of a large project involving major services infrastructure upgrades in one of the Silver Fern Farms, I have developed two projects involving the connection of existing consumption point groups to the new supplies. These projects required adding a handful of new elements to existing buildings while making careful site measurements to ensure installation feasibility, in areas packed with other devices and lines.

Wheat flour storage silos and packing line

    ALIMENTOS IRIGOYEN WHEAT MILL

Wheat flour storage silos and packing line

The project consisted of adding a group of silos, a 3rd party packing machine, a pallet loading cell (with a Fanuc robot arm), and a pneumatic transport system. My main contribution was the design, calculation and commissioning of the pneumatic transport system, a field in which we had no previous expertise.

    Drivetrain marriage shuttle upgrade

    MERCEDES BENZ ARGENTINA

    Drivetrain marriage shuttle upgrade

The project consisted of an upgrade of the marriage station, where the pre-assembled drivetrain of MB vans is mounted onto the van body (from below). The marriage is done by the marriage cart, which we upgraded with an interchangeable jig (pallets) system so that it could accept new engine models. The pallets are changed automatically by an overhead magazine consisting of a capture and retrieval lift, buffer pallet conveyors and a recirculating smaller lift. We also provided a specialized overhead crane for transferring the preassembled drivetrain from the preassembly station to the marriage cart
