Harry Allom

MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Skills Overview

Harry is a diligent and adaptable mechanical engineer with experience in heavy trailer manufacturing and cathodic protection systems for the oil & gas industry, spanning all stages of product design. He has worked closely with internal and external workshops, clients, and suppliers and is a well-rounded communicator. Committed to solving complex problems within time and cost constraints, Harry’s expertise covers 3D modelling and drafting, design for manufacture, simulation analysis, and project engineering.

    • DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE & ASSEMBLY – Harry has experience in mechanical design within the heavy transport industry, including chassis and equipment for logging, skeletal, and stainless steel tanker trailers. As well as skids, clamps and other equipment for use subsea in the oil & gas industry. Working closely with internal and external workshops, Harry has a strong grasp on design for manufacture principles, ensuring designs are cost effective and efficient.
    • CAD & DRAFTING – Harry’s experience is predominantly with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Draftsight, and SpaceClaim. He has used these products to create a wide range of complex parts and assemblies, as well as producing detailed fabrication, general arrangement, and site plan drawings.
    • PROJECT ENGINEERING & DOCUMENTATION – Harry has extensive project engineering experience and has contributed to all stages of the project lifecycle, from concept design through to manufacture, quality assurance, and client handover. Often wearing many hats, he has worked closely with suppliers, manufacturers, and clients, effectively managing communication and expectations to ensure successful outcomes. His work also includes preparing and maintaining comprehensive project documentation such as datasheets, installation and operating procedures, factory acceptance tests, and technical reports.
    • STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS & FEA – Harry has experience with structural analysis, hand calculations and FEA predominantly through his time designing heavy transport trailers at Patchell Industries Ltd. He has used SolidWorks Simulation for static, fatigue and non-linear analysis for various heavy transport components such as chassis, towing connections, dangerous goods crash bumpers, and container beams. He also has experience creating simulation ready models of oil rigs and off-shore platforms from reading fabrication and as-built drawings.

    PERSONAL STATEMENT

I am passionate about problem solving and enjoy tackling complex challenges and seeing concepts and designs come to life. I also take great joy in the collaborative side of engineering, meeting and learning from people from all walks of life.

My professional career began in the heavy transport industry with Patchell Industries in Rotorua. After a few years, I decided to pack up and move to the other side of the world. I spent a few months travelling with friends through Europe before settling in the UK, where I worked in the oil and gas cathodic protection industry. My engineering journey continues with Caliber Design, where I look forward to gaining experience across a wide range of industries.

Outside of work, I love spending time with family, staying active at the gym, getting outdoors for hikes, riding motorcycles, and exploring new places. I value honesty, integrity, and an open mindset, and I try to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

    Project Experience

Support Structures & Sheet Metal Design

Assisted predominantly supporting the structures team in the design of support structures to AS/NZS 1170 for a range of products such as conveyors, flumes, vibrating length sizers, and destoners. This involved developing design, 3D modelling, and producing assembly and fabrication drawings.

Additionally, I supported other teams specifically with sheet metal design. This included a produce barrier to integrate with existing and new equipment to stop produce entering a water pump and causing damage, as well as a new wash-down waste collection chute to integrate into a standard debris remover conveyor.

    Deepwater EU
    Subsea Cathodic Protection Systems

Contributed to the mechanical design and project engineering of subsea cathodic protection retrofit packages, including clamps, skids, and pods. Produced bid, GA, fabrication, site plan, and electrical system using SolidWorks and AutoCAD. Undertook procurement, documentation, and FAT testing to ensure compliance with offshore standards and client specifications.

    Wet-Parked Drilling Riser Retrofit

Managed the delivery of sacrificial cathodic protection clamp assemblies for a wet-parked drilling riser, encompassing technical documentation, design validation, material procurement, and coordination with suppliers and clients. Present during fabrication to assist with technical queries, completed QA activities ensuring performance and reliability under deep-water operating conditions.

    COMSOL Simulation Modelling

Created simulation ready 3D models of existing offshore structures for use in COMSOL, collaborating closely with corrosion modelling engineers to ensure proper functionality within the simulation environment. Supported design refinement by adjusting component geometry to enable accurate analysis of corrosion and verifying that cathodic protection retrofit systems met the required design life criteria.

    Tethered Anode System Clamp

Took charge of a new subsea clamp design for a subsea to topside tethered anode system, which was to be installed on a floating production platform. This process involved assessing client supplied reports and drawings, concept creation, team design review, developing & modelling the design, creating necessary fabrication drawings, and then completing necessary quality assurance work and documentation. The clamp had to be designed to ensure interfacing with the system and platform, as well as meeting off-shore installation and operational requirements.

    Patchell Industries Ltd
    Logging & Transport Trailers

Delivered mechanical design and analysis of heavy transport equipment, including logging, skeletal, and stainless steel tanker trailers. Applied design for manufacture principles, conducted FEA and hand calculations on chassis structures, and produced fabrication drawings and BOMs to meet certification requirements.

    Sliding-Bogie Trailer Development

Assisted in the design of a new concept sliding-bogie trailer. Contributed to CAD modelling, fabrication drawings, analysis, and focused on the design integration of an air brake operated locking pin mechanism.

Reverse Engineer 5-Axle Tanker Trailer Dolly

Tasked with AB29reverse engineering a defunct 5-axle tanker trailer dolly which had been manufactured by another company. This process required visually assessing and measuring the existing dolly and then creating a dolly design to suit the client’s specifications. Harry was the sole engineer tasked with completing the project, producing the necessary models, fabrication drawings and documentation.
