Scott Newberry
MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Skills Overview
Scott is a multidisciplinary mechatronics engineer, specialising in mechanical design. The combination of his experience in service work, as well as new concept design projects, allow him to not only to deliver novel designs, but also foresee maintenance and assembly requirements in finished designs. Key experience lies in product design across a wide range of a products lifecycle, from concept, to manufacture. Scott is handy with tools and never shys away from going hands on when testing and engineering validation is involved.
- MECHANICAL DESIGN – Scott is an experienced mechanical designer with experience using multiple CAD tools across diverse products. His electronics knowledge allows him to design for the integration of electrical systems into a mechanical system.
- ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE SERVICE WORK – Scott has several years experience working with single phase pluggable mains appliances. He is committed to ensuring safe operation and testing of appliances used in a range of settings, from industrial equipment, to consumer electronics, to dental and medical sterilisation equipment.
- PRESSURE-RATED ELECTRONICS – Scott has several years of experience designing and testing electromechanical assemblies, and electronics with environmental sealing, for operation in marine environments at depths exceeding 200m. Harsh environments such as these pose unique challenges to both manufacturing as well as design for maintenance.
- CALIBRATION & MEASUREMENT – Scott has a background in temperature measurement, datalogging, and calibration equipment, as well as an interest in ensuring the accuracy of any measurement he takes. Being wrong is ok, it is important to know how wrong, and how repeatable, a measurement is.
- WORKSHOP SKILLS – Scott is a maker, and is comfortable operating a wide range of tools and machinery to make things, build prototypes, test products in fixtures. This experience becomes invaluable during mechanical design tasks, so that parts are designed with ease of manufacture and QA/QC inspection in mind.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am a New Zealand native with a mechatronics engineering degree and international work experience. I’ve worked in roles spanning concept design, production management and improvement, as well as service and maintenance work. I’m never afraid of getting stuck in when prototypes and concepts need testing and validation.
My degree as a mechatronics engineer reflects my personality: I am a person with broad interests and a thirst for wide knowledge across many fields and disciplines. I am so infamous among friends and colleagues for my startlingly diverse range of hobbies that I’m known to some as ‘the skill addict’.
When not at work, I might be found anywhere from astride a motorcycle, in German language classes, social partner dancing, designing my own projects, blacksmithing, or target shooting … the list continues.
Project Experience

MASTA TEST
Bovine Mastitis Tester
Took ownership of the redesign for a prototype in an MVP state to remove issues in an image capture system, as well as design the enclosure for easier manufacture and to make better use of sheet metal components. Throughout Scott was involved with the production and production optimisation of the project.

IVIUM
Rotating Ring Disc Electrode
An RRDE is a piece of electrochemical test equipment used in various industries. It consists of a device that rotates a shaft from 100 to 10,000 RPM, with 1% error in RPM across its range. Scott was tasked with the entire design and manufacture life cycle of this product from industrial design, to first prototype, to manufacture, as well as handling maintenance and servicing of devices deployed to the field.

TAWHAKI PROJECT
Penguin Camera
Design and construction of a world first camera product; an HD wide angle camera that is attached to the backs of threatened and endangered penguins. From Otago to Antarctica, these cameras have had to face the harsh Marine environment and continue to operate reliably. Scott designed a sleek, low drag external geometry for the camera body, that was then cast in Marine resistant potting compound with a silicone moulding process.
