TIM PHILLIPS

Team Lead, based in Christchurch

Tim has been with Caliber since 2017. During this time, Tim’s partner was seconded to work in Scotland for a year, so Tim continued to work for Caliber remotely. Tim is the model Caliber engineer. We wish we could clone him! Super smart, high EQ, growth mindset … he’s a great guy.

Tim came to Caliber after 3 years as a manufacturing engineer at Dynamic Controls. Since then, Tim has worked on opening plate freezer and chilling tunnel designs for Milmeq, a fridge door production line at Scott Technology … but, most impressively, Tim spent 6000 hours working with the team at Cavotec on their automated ship mooring systems. That’s a fair chunk of his time with us. Now, he’s part of the team that are supporting Fabrum with the development of their hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and dispensing system. (Tim is passionate about sustainability and keen to be involved in projects that focus on emission reduction, so he’s stoked to get that opportunity here in Christchurch).

If there’s ever an opportunity to do something extra, Tim is always one of the first people to put their hand up. He’s been a judge for Kiwibots (an awesome in-schools robotics program that we sponsor), organised tree planting missions, attended events on behalf of Caliber, become a certified professional in SolidWorks and Inventor, and been proactive in driving process and system changes that benefit our clients and engineers. A natural, and much deserved, progression for Tim has been to take on a role as a Technical Lead.

This is an essential role within our company – providing advice and technical support for eight Caliber engineers, ensuring that they have everything they need to succeed in their secondments, and being the first port of call around wellbeing too. The Tech Lead position takes up 20% of Tim’s time … so he still has plenty of time to work on exciting client projects.

We consider ourselves lucky to have Tim on our team. We’re enjoying seeing his growth into new roles within our Company, and it’s our goal to ensure he continues to be challenged and fulfilled in his role.

Career Development at Caliber, Tim Phillips

The projects we work on can vary wildly. It could be a long term secondment delivering equipment designed from the ground up, or a matter of weeks to help a client with a block of detailed design or analysis. Some clients don’t have a clear direction in mind, and we can help them scope projects and develop customer and product requirements. I’m constantly challenged by my work, backed by a network of skilled colleagues, and find my growth heading in unexpected directions.
