FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Practical answers to the questions engineers ask most. Are Caliber Engineers employees or contractors?
Unless you specifically wish to contract to us, our team are employed on a permanent, full-time basis. You receive a wage, benefits, support, and a clear development pathway. Secondment is simply our delivery model, not your employment status. We pay by the hour (as well as overtime) but everything else, such as annual leave and sick leave are as you would expect as a salaried employee.
How does secondment work?
You work on site with our clients as part of their engineering teams. Most secondments run for three to six months, sometimes longer. When a project finishes, we look at what is coming up next and match you to the opportunity that best fits your skills, experience, and location. We aim to place you where you can add value and keep growing.
Will I be left on my own?
No. Even though you work autonomously on client sites, you are closely supported by:
- your Tech or Team Lead
- specialist Discipline Leads
- your Regional Manager
- the wider Caliber Network of 65+ engineers
There is always someone available when you need help or a second opinion. And quite often, there’ll be other Caliber engineers working alongside you!
What happens between secondments?
You remain fully employed. There is always a minimum of 40 hours available to work. Any gap between projects are called ‘admin days’ and are used for development, training, internal work, or preparation for the next role.
You have offices throughout New Zealand; will I have to move cities when I change secondments?
No. We have offices in Auckland, Waikato, Tauranga, Wellington, and Christchurch. If you are employed in the Auckland office for example, you would be placed on a project anywhere within Auckland. From time-to-time opportunities to travel further afield come up, but you typically stay in your region.
What if I’m early in my career or worried about not being experienced enough?
This is common and completely normal. If you have made it through Caliber’s employment process, we are confident that you are ready to be a Caliber engineer. Our testing is practical and thorough, and it gives us a clear understanding of your capability and potential.
From there, our 30,60,90 day induction programme introduces you to our trusted systems, processes, and templates, so you build capability and confidence quickly. You are not expected to figure everything out from scratch. We take real care matching you to projects that suit your experience and give you room to grow, and while the work can be demanding, you’re never without support.
When you join Caliber you are assigned to a Team Lead. They are your coach and mentor and will check in with you on a regular basis. We have Discipline Leads that offer deeper technical guidance, and your Regional Manager will also stay connected with your progress. As well as this, there is always the wider Caliber Network whenever you need help or a second opinion. Any Caliber engineer can call on any other Caliber engineer at any time. Everything is set up to help you succeed.
Will I feel connected to the team if everyone works at different client sites?
Yes. Each region has regular team lunches, pub meetings, technical sessions, and quarterly activities. We take connection seriously because it’s essential to how we operate.
What does learning and development look like?
Most learning happens on the job, through real project work and exposure to different industries. Our Learning & Development programme is there to support that growth with structure, guidance, and resources tailored to your background and goals.
What does career progression look like?
As your capability builds, opportunities open up. Engineers progress into more complex project work and into roles such as Technical Lead, Team Lead, or Discipline Lead. There are also opportunities to work in different regions.
Do you support engineers relocating to New Zealand?
Yes. We are accredited with Immigration New Zealand and regularly hire engineers from overseas. Engineers who are looking at moving to NZ, are put in touch with Caliber Engineers who have done the move themselves. Our engineers can offer practical advice, assistance with the visa application process, knowledge of the local area, indications on the differences in the cost of living etc. We also have created a Settling into NZ Guide with useful tips and resources.
Why does Caliber advertise for engineers so often?
Because we are growing! Caliber has expanded from five engineers in 2015 to almost 70 in 2025. Demand for project engineering, design, and analysis continues to increase across New Zealand, and we are scaling our team to match. Our retention rate is strong. When you see frequent advertising, it reflects growth and demand for our services, not high turnover.
If you have a question we haven’t answered, please get in touch with Nicky Deller, HR Manager. We are always happy to answer any questions you have.
