How did you get into engineering?

I never planned on a career in engineering, I naturally followed what I enjoyed and excelled at which landed on mechanical engineering.

What do you enjoy most about mechanical engineering?

I definitely enjoy the problem solving & concept design the most, closely followed by detailed design and technical analysis.

Where / what did you study?

I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury.

What engineering experience did you have before you came to Caliber?

I spent 3 years working in small design consultancy on site at the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter. I was involved in a range of projects in every department, in my final year I won a safety design excellence award for one of my projects which removed operator interaction from a dangerous process.

What makes working for Caliber different from the other engineering companies you’ve worked for?

The massive variation you get with every project. You have the opportunity to slot into world class engineering teams that produce cutting edge industry leading technology, what more can you ask for!

Is there a particular project that’s been a highlight of your career?

Not at this stage, there are always new learnings and experiences in each project that are enjoyable. My favourite secondment so far was being apart of the Cavotec MoorMaster team, which involved working on their cutting edge NxG MoorMaster Machine.

What would you dream project be?

I don’t think there is ‘one project’ that would be perfect for me, one of the best parts about be in engineer for Caliber is range or roles that I get to experience.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Outside of work I enjoy throwing around weights in the gym and annoying my neighbours with my bagpipes. So far I’ve represented NZ at the IPF World Powerlifting Championships in 2019 and currently play with the City of Invercargill Grade 1 Pipe Band which placed 3rd equal at the last National Championships. If that doesn’t sound like enough I also like to head up skiing during the winter and going hiking in the summer.
