Skills Overview
Andrew is a mechanical engineer with a background in innovative product development roles. He relishes opportunities to solve problems alongside multi-disciplinary teams, with a strong track record of implementation and delivery. He has the flair to ideate, practicality to iterate, and technical aptitude to optimise concepts through to solutions. His output is recognised on design registrations, patents, released product and industry awards. Andrew’s delivery in both R&D and project engineering demonstrates breadth and adaptability. His consideration of the detail, system and life cycle strives to champion user needs whilst treading lightly on our environment.
- CONSUMER PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT – Andrew is experienced traversing the entire design process; from research, specification and initial ideation through to final design, tooling and pre-production. Structuring and approaching each phase demands distillation of large, ambiguous challenges into discrete and approachable steps.
- PROTOTYPING, TESTING & ITERATION – Andrew is competent and effective in a workshop environment. He is proficient using a broad spectrum of tools to make prototypes for visual mock-up, user/field testing or controlled testing to failure. He is comfortable working with metal, wood, composites and plastics. Andrew is experienced designing tests to assess against standards, validate simulation/analysis, and ultimately maximise learnings.
- CAD & FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS – Andrew has extensively used both Solidworks and Onshape across entire project cycles. His passion for efficient and considered modelling practices make the best use of parametric capability; future proofing models for adjustability, handover and easy collaboration.
- DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE & ASSEMBLY – Multiple mass-produced products prove Andrew’s consideration of manufacture and assembly throughout the design process. He is comfortable considering tooling methodology, seeking and integrating advice from production staff, mitigating potential quality issues, and being humbled watching someone attempt to assemble his prototype. Considering ‘how it gets made’ should inform approach early, not be rushed in the end stages.
- PROJECT ENGINEERING – In his experience as a project engineer, Andrew planned, executed and reported on a range of projects in the marine operations and infrastructure space. He demonstrated competence in managing timelines, resources and complex international stakeholder relationships. He has experience liaising with council and consenting, addressing Iwi and public engagement, and management of subcontractors. He is comfortable managing worksites with multiple teams, ensuring smooth operational delivery.
- TECHNICAL REPORTING – Andrew is an effective written communicator. He has produced many reports for internal and external stakeholders. He tailors detail and language to the intended reader; whether it be a concise learnings summary, milestone progress report or final client deliverable. Ideas are only as good as the way they are presented.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I’m incredibly excited to be a part of the Caliber whanau and contribute to our growing presence in Te Whanganui a Tara. New Zealand’s track record of innovation is impressive, and provides me a constant source of inspiration.
Beyond being reared on Lego bricks and my formal education, I firmly believe in learning from both engineers and non-engineers alike. I am lucky to have worked alongside a multitude of disciplines and perspectives, which continues to evolve my approach to the craft. I love the learning that comes from breaking prototypes quicker than they are made. I relish in the intense focus of refining small details, and am equally comfortable zooming out to ask, ‘Are we solving the right problem?’
Outside of work, I cherish adventures outdoors in my backyard and further afield. I am a passionate mountain biker, guitar player, gardener, and cook.
Project Experience

GOODNATURE
Smart Mouse Trap
Lead Engineer from concept freeze to signing-off on tool release. Responsible for the design for manufacture of 13 injection-moulded parts using the Onshape CAD platform, and specification of externally supplied parts. Awarded Gold (best-in-category) for Consumer Product at the 2024 Designers Institute Best Awards. Awarded a 2025 iF Design Award. Recognised on the product patent and design registration.
Aerial Micro Trap
Contributed to research and development of an aerially-deployed, non-toxic, humane and biodegradable rat trap. The project was funded in partnership with DOC and Predator Free 2050 ltd. Planned and executed research around biodegradation, materiality, structural and humane performance. Collaborated externally with factories, universities, government research institutions, international consultancies, toolmakers, helicopter pilots, and IP lawyers. Formally reported work to DOC to secure milestone funding payments. Conducted interviews to create user personas and industry maps, influencing design of user experience. Facilitated cross-functional brainstorming sessions to address key challenges.

FORMWAY
Teknion Blink Chair
Worked on the concept design phase of the Teknion Blink chair up to the design-freeze milestone. Explored and developed solutions for several key challenges relating to structure, manufacture, assembly and achieving ergonomic performance. Extensive Solidworks CAD, Solidworks FEA prototyping, structural testing and ergonomic validation. Recognised on the product design registration.

Strainrite Triple Reel Pro
Robertson Engineering Ltd | Strainrite Triple Reel Pro | Delivered research and development for the Strainrite Triple Reel Pro. Completed user research, scope refinement, testing, prototyping and Solidworks CAD design within a short project timeframe. Delivered a working prototype to validate progression to a limited production run.

SEAWORKS
Pre-Lay Shore-End Undersea Fibre Cable Installation
In addition to core Project Engineering role – Delivered design using Onshape CAD platform for >NZD100,000 custom fabricated vessel equipment; used successfully in undersea fibre cable landing into Orewa, Auckland. Brought design capability in-house, delivering significant savings and improved performance. Advocated-for and implemented design for disassembly and reusability.
