Oliver Tizard

TECHNICAL LEAD

Skills Overview

Oliver balances creativity with practicality when it comes to finding engineering solutions. As someone who thrives in a team environment, you can trust him to engage in your team and produce an outcome that reflects your unique requirements. This is shown in a 7+ year track record the Food, Materials Handling, Construction and Marine industries. This is shown in a 8+ year track record the Defence, Food, Materials Handling, Construction, and Marine industries.

    • PRODUCT DESIGN – Oliver has extensive experience in product design, particularly for demanding environments. At Cubic Defence, he developed soldier-worn and vehicle-mounted equipment for realistic training exercises, designed to endure harsh conditions with a 15-year lifecycle. His work involved rapid prototyping, iterative testing, validation, detailed design, and production planning. At Modular Conveyors, Oliver contributed to the development of standard devices like diverts and belt transfers and delivered vigh value materials handling projects. These roles highlight his ability to innovate and deliver robust, high-performance products.
    • PLANT & MACHINE DESIGN – Oliver has a strong background in plant and heavy machinery design. At Rendertech, he played a key role in the Greenfield design of one of New Zealand’s largest rendering facilities. His responsibilities included designing large-scale equipment such as mixing hoppers (up to 250m³), screw conveying systems, humidifiers (up to 140m³), ducting for steam and odor control, and heavy support structures. He ensured seamless integration of OEM equipment while delivering detailed drawing packs. This experience demonstrates his ability to manage complex projects from concept to completion with precision and efficiency.
    • COLLABORATION & TEAMWORK – Oliver thrives in collaborative environments, working effectively with diverse teams including engineers, manufacturers, and specialists. He has successfully coordinated efforts on multidisciplinary projects such as working with electronics departments to meet physical soldier requirements at Cubic Defence and collaborating on joint ventures like the Auckland Airport upgrade. Being immersed in over five distinct industries has sharpened his ability to navigate complex environments and adapt quickly. Most recently, he co-founded a startup focused on plant-based protein products, further demonstrating his ability to collaborate and deliver results in innovative settings.
    • ANALYSIS & DOCUMENTATION – Oliver is well versed in structural analysis and technical documentation for critical projects. At Belcanto, he designed a lightweight aluminum cantilever balcony system for modular apartments in Wellington, ensuring it could withstand seismic and wind loads while being easy to assemble and install. At Babcock NZ, he performed mechanical design and verification of shock-rated equipment mounts aboard naval vessels and surveyed critical safety systems. Additionally, at Alstef Group, he designed large structural platforms for conveyor lines in a congested airport environment, combining structural analysis with detailed design to meet stringent requirements.

    PERSONAL STATEMENT

Engineering in a broad sense has always been an outlet for me. From a young age I’ve always gravitated towards the machines around me with a special focus on disassembly and pretty mixed results on the re-assembly. Over the years the machines and resources at my disposal have changed but the trend remains fairly consistent.

Studying and learning 3D modeling gave me the tools I needed for my outlet, so becoming a design engineer was the natural progression of this.

I feel very fortunate to work in a job that gives me the sense of satisfaction that comes with seeing my sketches become reality.

    Project Experience

    ALSTEF
    Structural Support Design, Analysis

Auckland Airport upgrade project design of structural supports, platforms and catwalk for complex conveyor lines. The largest of the platforms was 85m long supported from above and below and was integrated into an extremely congested building environment. The design was done on the AutoCAD based program Advance Steel with some supporting structural analysis done on Robot.

Plant & Heavy Machinery Design at Rendertech

    RENDERTECH

    Plant & Heavy Machinery Design

Plant design of rendering equipment with a throughput of 14 ton per hour, turning animal carcases into meal and tallow (bio fuel). This included design of heavy machinery used to store transport and process material, including bins (up to 250m³), screw conveying systems, ducting (steam and odour control), humidifiers (up to 140m³), platforms, and large support structures. The project involved analysis and I provided detailed drawing packs where required.

    Carton Conveyor Line

    SCOTT AUTOMATION

    Pork Primal Bandsaw

This saw is capable of performing individually optimized cuts on two parallel pork carcasses at high speeds. Throughout this project I worked on the design team tasked with the concept development design and drafting of this fully automated conveyor fed bandsaw, as well as assisting with the machining and fitting in order to meet tight deadlines.

    Cubic Defence

    JMP ENGINEERING

    Design, Prototyping, Validation, Production

Product design of equipment worn by soldiers and used on vehicles in highly realistic training exercises, designed to withstand punishing conditions with a typical design life-cycle of 15 years. The design process involved rapid cycles of prototyping (typically with plastics), testing and iterating concepts, followed by validation, detail design, documentation and production planning.

    Pork Primal Bandsaw

    JMP ENGINEERING

    Carton Conveyor Line

This project involved turning a 2D layout drawing into a complete model and set of manufacturing drawings for the mechanical aspect of this automated conveyor line. The design employs a combination of angled roller belt and internally driven roller sections to transport and sort cartons for various operations such as label printing and picking.

    Bike Engine Rebuild

    PERSONAL PROJECT

    Modifying & Rebuilding Bike Engine

This is a personal project of mine which involved rebuilding the engine of my KLX400 Supermoto with a big bore piston and cylinder barrel to bring the displacement from 400cc to 450cc. Out of interest I modelled the engine internals so I could run a finite element analysis and get an appreciation for the stresses involved in changing to a larger and heavier forged conrod and piston.

    HMNZS Aotearoa Babcock

    BABCOCK

    Design, Analysis, Documentation

Design and verification of shock rated equipment mounts involving modelling and FE Analysis. Documentation and drafting of critical safety items across the fleet. Mechanical design and verification on new equipment installations.

    Belcanto Otto Apartments

    BELCANTO

    Concept Design & Verification

Concept design and vertification of Suspended Balcony to structural standards. The design used a lightweight aluminium structure, capable of withstanding heavy seismic loads. Manufacturing and installation was simplified with the use of a fabrication free folded sheet metal structure.

    Pealab

    PERSONAL PROJECT

    Pealab

I am in the process of launching a nutrition company called Pealab with a focus on improving the taste of plant proteins.
