DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE – Oliver spent the first years of his career between the design office and the workshop floor, working with high-tech automation machinery and gaining a practical, hands-on foundation for design. He benefitted greatly from following jobs through from concept to completion, often being involved in the testing and commissioning stage — whether testing automated handling equipment, assembling electronics into soldier-worn training kit, or riveting panels together in the aerospace industry. Oliver bakes in real-world manufacturing practice from the start, saving you money and making sure stuff works.

PROJECT ENGINEERING & COLLABORATION – Oliver is currently managing a plant upgrade at NZ’s largest LPG bottle facility, working to an open-ended brief of increasing capacity from the outset while automating operations in an explosive-risk environment. He is experienced in working closely with different departments and disciplines to align on a common goal and navigates complex regulatory environments and procedures such as those found in defence, oil and gas, and aerospace with confidence. Oliver will proactively manage your budgets and timelines, identify issues early, and provide business-conscious engineering solutions.

MECHANICAL ANALYSIS – Oliver has completed analysis across the aerospace, structural, heavy machinery and marine industries, on 250+ cubic meter tanks, mounting systems for aerospace flight parts, large frames and aluminum hanging balconies. Familiar with NX (Nastran), SolidWorks, Inventor and other structural packages. He takes a common-sense approach, and whether it’s a quick sanity check or a fully documented structural report, Oliver can give you the confidence you need while working to a tight timeline.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT – Oliver will take your unique requirements into consideration, whether it’s handling challenging materials, plant/ operator safety or environmental abuse. He takes a creative but well-grounded approach and works across different disciplines to drive projects to completion. His experience spans injection-molded plastics for electronic devices, aerospace flight parts, machine design on automated handling systems, heavy screw conveyors and processing equipment, and hanging modular balcony design.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Engineering in a broad sense has always been an outlet for me. From a young age I’ve always gravitated towards the machines around me with a special focus on disassembly and pretty mixed results on the re-assembly. Over the years the machines and resources at my disposal have changed but the trend remains fairly consistent.
Studying and learning 3D modeling gave me the tools I needed for my outlet, so becoming a design engineer was the natural progression of this.
I feel very fortunate to work in a job that gives me the sense of satisfaction that comes with seeing my sketches become reality.
Project Experience
AEROSPACE COMPANY
Design, Analysis, Testing, Documentation
Designed and performed structural and vibration analysis key parts, including the mounting and packaging of key avionics equipment (vehicle hardware). Delivered a mounting solution for the fluid lines on the upper section of the rocket under a tight timeline, working within strict weight constraints and extreme vibration loads. Other work included bracket analysis reviews across departments and getting my hands dirty with vibration and tensile testing and assisting with vehicle assembly.

Structural Support Design, Analysis
Auckland Airport upgrade project design of structural supports, platforms and catwalk for complex conveyor lines. The largest of the platforms was 85m long supported from above and below and was integrated into an extremely congested building environment. The design was done on the AutoCAD based program Advance Steel with some supporting structural analysis done on Robot.

RENDERTECH
Plant & Heavy Machinery Design
Plant design of rendering equipment with a throughput of 14 ton per hour, turning animal carcases into meal and tallow (bio fuel). This included design of heavy machinery used to store transport and process material, including bins (up to 250m³), screw conveying systems, ducting (steam and odour control), humidifiers (up to 140m³), platforms, and large support structures. The project involved analysis and I provided detailed drawing packs where required.

SCOTT AUTOMATION
Pork Primal Bandsaw
This saw is capable of performing individually optimized cuts on two parallel pork carcasses at high speeds. Throughout this project I worked on the design team tasked with the concept development design and drafting of this fully automated conveyor fed bandsaw, as well as assisting with the machining and fitting in order to meet tight deadlines.

JMP ENGINEERING
Design, Prototyping, Validation, Production
Product design of equipment worn by soldiers and used on vehicles in highly realistic training exercises, designed to withstand punishing conditions with a typical design life-cycle of 15 years. The design process involved rapid cycles of prototyping (typically with plastics), testing and iterating concepts, followed by validation, detail design, documentation and production planning.

JMP ENGINEERING
Carton Conveyor Line
This project involved turning a 2D layout drawing into a complete model and set of manufacturing drawings for the mechanical aspect of this automated conveyor line. The design employs a combination of angled roller belt and internally driven roller sections to transport and sort cartons for various operations such as label printing and picking.

PERSONAL PROJECT
Modifying & Rebuilding Bike Engine
This is a personal project of mine which involved rebuilding the engine of my KLX400 Supermoto with a big bore piston and cylinder barrel to bring the displacement from 400cc to 450cc. Out of interest I modelled the engine internals so I could run a finite element analysis and get an appreciation for the stresses involved in changing to a larger and heavier forged conrod and piston.

Design, Analysis, Documentation
Design and verification of shock rated equipment mounts involving modelling and FE Analysis. Documentation and drafting of critical safety items across the fleet. Mechanical design and verification on new equipment installations.

BELCANTO
Concept Design & Verification
Concept design and vertification of Suspended Balcony to structural standards. The design used a lightweight aluminium structure, capable of withstanding heavy seismic loads. Manufacturing and installation was simplified with the use of a fabrication free folded sheet metal structure.

PERSONAL PROJECT
Pealab
I am in the process of launching a nutrition company called Pealab with a focus on improving the taste of plant proteins.

Judging at the Kiwibots VEX robotics champs
Ollie represented Caliber as a judge at the 2023 Kiwibots VEX robotics champs. Kiwibots run a robotics education and competition program that spans from primary school to university. Their aim is to inspire and empower the next generation of innovators. Caliber Design are a proud sponsor of Kiwibots.
