Simon Reid
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Skills Overview
Simon draws a depth of experience in the hydro power industry. Capturing the feasibility, design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of hydro power schemes within his scope of knowledge. He has worked with run of river hydros and dammed schemes, both Francis and Pelton turbines in both the horizontal and vertical orientation. Working within a range of sizes from 5kW to 65MW. Simon also has a strong backing in project management and has lead teams from project start to finish in both the mechanical and civil sector. His prior experience as engineering manager has lead to refining his skill set in people management and project leadership.
- MECHANICAL DESIGN – Simon has a depth of knowledge when it comes to mechanical design, specifically in the hydro power space, understanding fits, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and assembly considerations. Designing complete hydro turbines of both Francis and Pelton systems, considering assembly procedures, manufacturability and cost-to-value ratio for every component that makes up the turbine assembly.
His design knowledge spans outside of hydro also, having many transposable skills from hydro to other industry, he has provided design solutions for pulp and paper, Forestry and geothermal to name a few. - PROJECT ENGINEERING / PROJECT MANAGEMENT – Simon has a broad history of project engineering / project management, stemming from capex projects at a bitumen processing plant to bridge repairs on skippers canyon road and further leading the mechanical installation for a new hydro power station to name a few key projects. All projects required detailed and defined planning, compiling documentation and drawings, clear instruction, tasking appropriate individuals to complete key duties and closing out projects in a timely manner. Simon’s projects see completion within set time frames and without delays due to unforeseen issues. He is quick to work towards solutions during project delivery ensuring time delays on issues are kept to a minimum. Simon is not unwilling to put the hours in to get the job done.
- HYDRO – Simon’s niche is hydro turbines. He has lead the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning on various hydro power schemes and turbine arrangements. He has a depth of knowledge on designing but also installation of hydro turbines and loves to get involved on both fronts. Assisting his team with installation and alignment of the turbines. He builds both his hands on skills and understanding of design considerations for assembly which he uses to his advantage for future designs.
- CLIENT COMMUNICATION – Simon communicates very effectively with clients to ensure the utmost information is obtained from each client to ensure understanding and the scope of the issue, problem or project is understood in detail. He keeps consistent with updating and checking in with the client to ensure satisfaction and capture any issues or concerns early on during the project or design phase. He ensures critical information is captured by way of email or documentation.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Tauranga born and raised, I grew up on a lifestyle block where I was constantly challenged by motivated, hard-working parents. The “do it yourself” Kiwi mentality was ingrained in me early, as I helped my father with projects like building a three-bay shed and repairing old cars. These hands-on experiences, paired with a family history of engineers, sparked my passion for the field.
After finishing at Tauranga Boys’ College, I earned my engineering degree at Canterbury. I began my career in project management, quickly gaining recognition with the CCNZ Hynds Construction Award and the Young Professionals Award for Project Management. My interest then shifted to hydro turbines, where my love for mechanical engineering deepened. I’m continually amazed by how engineering can achieve such incredible outcomes, with hydro being a prime example—a machine that converts water into electrical power with >90% efficiency.
I love a challenge. And even more the satisfaction of solving it.
Outside of work, I find passion in the outdoors—whether spearfishing, hunting, or skiing on water or snow. The outdoors is my happy place.
Project Experience

VORTEX GROUP
Vanuatu Hydro
Supporting in the design, manufacture management and installation of a x2 twin nozzle pelton wheel power station in Vanuatu. Presenting as lead site mechanical engineer for the installation of mechanical componentry. This included guidance and assistance for the mechanical fitting team ensuring smooth workflow, design adherence, quality assurance, and general project management.

VORTEX GROUP
Laos Scanning & Modelling
Identified operational issues with Francis turbines leading to premature failure. Conducted 3D scanning of the runner, created a reverse-engineered model, and analysed for design issues.

PHILIPPINES PROJECT
Propeller Turbine
Completed the design, engineering drawing creation, engineering installation report and job management to manufacture completion of a propeller turbine. Arrangement of a packing system, including a specialty cradle to fit within the internal space of a 20ft container was also included in the major turbine design. This turbine was sent to the Philippines for installation by the client. Both a detailed packaging report and site installation and assembly report was created to support installation by the customer.
VORTEX GROUP
Waimea Water
Completed the design, engineering drawing creation, and job management to manufacture completion of a micro Francis hydro turbine to be installed within an irrigation dam.

DOWNER
Skipper Canyon Bridge Transom Repairs
Identified that the transoms were cracking on skippers canyon bridge using a drone. Worked with consultants and chartered engineers to solve the issue by means of supporting the existing with a channel and thru bolts. Height access contractors were used to install the new channel.

CALIBER CHALLENGE
2025
Winners of the 2025 Caliber Challenge showed outstanding engineering skill, commercial acumen, and teamwork under pressure. In just 4.5 hours, their team tackled a mystery brief, developed a concept, built a business case, and pitched to a panel of “investors.”
