    • MECHANICAL DESIGN – Shane has mechanical design experience across multiple industries, including FMCG equipment design, medical devices R&D equipment design, and high-volume manufacturing equipment continuous improvement design. He has completed mechanical design projects from concept through to manufacture and commissioning, working closely with controls engineers and electricians throughout the design phase to ensure mechanical, electrical, and controls elements integrate cleanly. Shane also has experience creating machine documentation, including machine manuals, guides, and pneumatic/electrical drawings. This varied experience makes him versatile and excited to learn and develop across more industries.
    • PROJECT ENGINEERING – Shane has independently managed process improvement projects across high-volume manufacturing equipment. Due to the nature of the production environment, managing these projects required input from multiple stakeholders, including the production, planning, quality assurance, R&D, and OEM install teams. Ensuring alignment between all stakeholders was critical for delivering projects on time and in a compliant fashion. Shane also worked as part of an engineering team responsible for the project engineering element of a major site capital expansion, overseeing the design and commissioning of more than five machines. This involved design reviews with the machine designer and manufacturer, change control and management for requested changes, and risk mitigation to ensure machine changes were tested early enough to meet downstream deadlines.
    • QUALITY AND COMPLIANCE – Shane’s background in the medical devices industry has shown him the importance of quality and compliance in ensuring engineering decisions are made with the safety of the consumer or user in mind, however far removed they may be from the shop floor. This experience carries over to multiple sectors, particularly where safety and regulation are of utmost importance.
    • ANALYSIS – Working as a production engineer allowed Shane the opportunity to flex his troubleshooting ability using structured methodologies such as DMAIC. Often, he has found that problems on the shop floor are not the result of a single source. Scratching further than the surface often results in identifying the multiple factors that may be resulting in issues like yield loss and downtime. This experience gives him the foundation to solve similar problems in the future, or root them out altogether if identified in the design phase.

    PERSONAL STATEMENT

    I am Shane van Niekerk, a BSc Mechanical Engineer (CEng MIET) with a technical background that spans multiple industries and multiple countries. I completed my education in South Africa at the University of KwaZulu-Natal before my first engineering role as a junior design engineer for an FMCG equipment design and manufacturing company. I subsequently moved to the UK where I enjoyed ~7 years within the medical devices industry working across roles in R&D and Operations, further developing my design skill set and learning and growing skills in project engineering and production engineering. Since joining Caliber, I have already had the opportunity to work across multiple new industries, which has expanded my skill set and also given me an appreciation for the scale and impact engineers have on the world we live in. Outside of work I enjoy the outdoors. Whether it’s a hike, a fishing trip, or a day on a dirt bike.

    PALLET LIFTER UPGRADE

    Concept Designs

    Shane worked as a design engineer to develop two conceptual designs for an upgraded goods-only lift used in a highly corrosive environment. The scope required concept detail sufficient to produce Type 2 estimates, enabling a decision on the preferred concept and route forward.

    Design Support

    Shane worked as a design engineer to develop a method for folding down box flaps to enable a collaborative robot to pick and place items within the box. The project included selection of appropriate pneumatic actuation equipment and dynamic design, ensuring the motion induced by the pneumatic equipment met the customer’s requirements.

    CAPACITY EXPANSION – MACHINE IMPROVEMENTS

    Design Leadership

    As part of a site capacity expansion, Shane led the identification and implementation of design improvements across multiple new production machines. Stakeholder input from technicians, support, and production teams was consolidated into a scope of improvements, which Shane presented to the engineering department to align priorities. Key improvements included converting a pneumatic axis to a servo-driven system with closed-loop position feedback, and retrofitting a vision inspection station with a precision XY adjustment stage for fine calibration. Shane led ongoing design reviews with the equipment supplier, evaluating changes against the user requirement specification and prioritising work based on risk to validation and production schedules.

    CAPACITY EXPANSION – MACHINE IMPROVEMENTS

    Corrosive Environment Design

    Shane worked as a design engineer to develop the in-feed locating feature and specify corrosion-resistant bellows and O-rings for a semi-automated bottle filling machine operating in a highly corrosive process environment. Careful component selection ensured reliable operation and prevented premature failure due to exposure to the corrosive liquid being filled.

    SEALING PROCESS IMPROVEMENT

    Mechanism Design

    Shane designed a new tape brake mechanism, incorporating a dancing-arm assembly and sprag clutch, to resolve inconsistent sealing caused by uneven tension on an indexing cover tape reel within a high-volume production machine. Following successful validation, the design was adopted as a standard requirement for future machines purchased from the equipment vendor.

    OPTICAL INSPECTION SYSTEM UPGRADE

    Project Engineering & Design

    Shane led the upgrade of a machine’s optical inspection system to a newer sensor platform, managing the project from technical design through to procurement and validation. Responsibilities included developing new inspection programs, conducting design reviews, and identifying a direct-purchase procurement route that delivered cost savings; Shane presented the business case to senior management to secure approval and funding. Implementation timing was determined by mapping the longest lead-time items and building in contingency, with a reversibility plan agreed in advance to protect the production schedule. Throughout, Shane coordinated closely with the equipment vendor and quality teams to meet strict regulatory requirements.
