Angus McKay
TEAM LEAD
Skills Overview
Angus is an experienced mechanical engineer with a diverse skill set and a proven track record in mechanical design, documentation, and project engineering. He has a keen eye for detail, brings a wealth of expertise, and slots in easily in any team.
-
MECHANICAL DESIGN AND ANALYSIS – Angus is a skilled mechanical designer and analyst, demonstrating his expertise across a wide range of projects. His experience involves the detailed design of custom lifting beams, the development of high-precision aluminum and sheet metal components for automated production lines, and the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for product optimisation and failure analysis. Angus has hands-on experience in making modifications and improvements to conveyor designs at Tiwai, designing high-pressure & cryogenic pipework at BOC, designing support structures at Wyma Solutions and the design and analysis of steel pedestal frames for Cavotec MoorMaster machines. showcasing a solid grasp of structural engineering principles.
-
PROJECT ENGINEERING & MANAGEMENT – Angus excels in project engineering and has a strong track record of successfully delivering complex projects. His involvement in the installation and commissioning of a wood pellet storage and transfer system at Synlait, under the guidance of a remote Project Manager. At Tiwai, he gained hands-on experience in project engineering, overseeing the installation of projects he was directly involved in designing. Additionally, during his time at BOC, Angus managed multiple CAPEX improvement projects, including the upgrade of the Christchurch filling centre’s nitrogen filling capabilities to 300 bar, taking the project from initial scope development through to implementation and successful commissioning.
-
ENGINEERING DOCUMENTATION – Angus is meticulous in his approach to documentation, recognising its pivotal role in project success. He has been involved in developing comprehensive operation and maintenance manuals for a hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and transport facilities at Fabrum, generating drawing standards for Wyma Solutions based on feedback from their workshop staff and preparing CAPEX papers and scope of works documents at BOC. Angus’s attention to detail extends to hazard identification markings, labelling, and tagging, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
-
SITE WORKS – Angus brings a hands-on and collaborative approach to on-site projects, ensuring effective solutions in partnership with clients and contractors. His experience includes successful implementation of projects at BOC, Tiwai and Vortex where he has successfully installed and commissioned projects without incident.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I enjoy both the creative and technical challenges engineering design provides, taking problems through the full design process from concept generation to delivering the final product. I have a high attention to detail and always strive to improve and innovate.
I spent the first three years of my career based at Tiwai Aluminium smelter. This role provided me with a vast exposure to the full engineering design process in wide variety of work.
Outside of engineering I compete competitively in both powerlifting and bagpiping.
Project Experience
WYMA SOLUTIONS
Support Structures & Platforms
Designed support structures and access platforms for a range of large-scale vegetable processing lines. This involved performing engineering calculations, developing detailed designs, creating 3D models, and producing drawings, all while meeting tight project deadlines. In addition, I contributed to Wyma’s standard calculation tools to improve design efficiency and prepared an induction document to help Caliber Engineers quickly integrate into Wyma projects. This document has also been adopted by Wyma to onboard their new staff more effectively.
Hydrogen Liquefication, Storage and Dispensing
I had the opportunity to work on an exciting and fast-paced project with FABRUM, where we helped develop a cutting-edge hydrogen liquefaction and storage facility. Projects like this are particularly exciting because they are at the forefront of engineering, driving us closer to a decarbonized future. Throughout the project, I had a wide range of responsibilities. I was involved in writing the operation and maintenance manuals, helped developed control sequences and safety procedures, and ensured proper labelling, tagging, and hazard identification markings on site. Additionally, I played a role in the overall design of the facility, including pipework design, component mounting, and layouts.

SCOTT TECHNOLOGY
Pick & Place Transfer System
Designed a pick and place transfer system for an automated production line production. This project involved designing high precision lightweight aluminum components in a tightly constrained environment to ensure the accurate placement of the product.

BOC GASES
As a project manager, I had the opportunity to lead multiple CAPEX improvement projects at BOC. Most notably, I managed the upgrade of the Christchurch filling centre’s nitrogen filling capabilities to 300 bar. This involved taking the project from initial scope development through to implementation and successful commissioning.

Design & Fabrication
Supporting the design and fabrication of stainless steel parts and piping for the Wairi water treatment plant.

Mechanical Design, Analysis & Project Engineering
Completed detailed design of customised lifting beams for materials handling. Conducted FEA to identify failure points on a large vibrating frame and redesigned the structure to eliminate high-stress areas, preventing potential future failures. Modified and improved power-and-free conveyors at Tiwai to incorporate enhanced safety features. Responsibilities also included on-site project management, contractor supervision, preparation of JSAs, and overseeing commissioning and testing activities.

Wood Pellet Boiler Conversion
Assisted, as a Project Engineer, in the installation and early commissioning of a wood pellet storage and transfer system at Synlait as part of their decarbonisation initiative. Working under a remote Project Manager, completed the on-site delivery of the project ready for operation.

Cast Footplate Design
Wyma Solutions, a prominent manufacturer of post-harvest handling equipment, currently use a stainless machined footplate design for their support structures. Recognising a potential cost-saving opportunity, Angus proposed moving to a cast footplate design. Angus was given the go ahead to redesign the footplate to make it suitable for casting. The redesigned footplate achieved the equivalent strength and functionality with a 40% reduction in total mass and resulted in a projected cost savings of 40% per foot.
CAVOTEC
MoorMaster Pedestal
Involved in the design of multiple steel pedestal frames required to raise the Cavotec MoorMaster machines to avoid obstacles at various births. This involved both conceptual design along with detailed analysis of the frames using calculations, FEA and civil interface analysis.

SOUTHERN ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS
Designed improvements to a large ribbon mixer for the food processing industry. This involved measuring and creating a detailed model of an existing mixer, then designing improvements.

GOOD BUGGER AWARD
August 2024
Angus is constantly looking at how things can be done better. (One of his ideas, redesign of a footplate for Wyma, is saving them about $40K per year) … and he’s recently been promoted to Tech Lead.
November 2021
Angus finished a project at Cavotec where he supported the design of steel mounting structures. He received great feedback in all areas including communication, productivity and work quality and was given an NPS of 10/10 – his third 10/10 in a row!!
